It's fair to say that the announcement of the ModRetro Chromatic took the retro gaming world by surprise.
Created by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey and boasting FPGA architecture to ensure 100% compatibility and accuracy, the Chromatic is set to shake up the Game Boy world in 2024 – and Luckey has been sharing some details online about just how much time and effort has been expended on making sure this thing is as good as it can be.
When quizzed on the display, Luckey replied:
I spent a ton of money developing a custom display of money developing a custom display that is accurate all the way to the subpixel level, which is critical given how subpixel-aware good art of the time had to be. The panel isn't even standard RGB, we used custom color filters to mimic the GBC LCD.
The Chromatic runs Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, as well as its own bespoke cartridge format, which will be used to host a bunch of modern-day Game Boy Color releases.
It launches this Christmas and can be pre-ordered for $200 / £160.

Sounds like the display is going to look very nice in terms of replicating the original(s).
“I spent a ton of money developing a custom display of money”
Fantastic typo, XD
That’s a lot of ultimate, indeed. Intrigued.
@Nahhhtendo We can blame the journalist for that one.
"3 x AAA batteries" and... I'm out.
The product page does say it will take a lithium battery... but then their store doesn't sell it to you!
@nocdaes Accommodating AA batteries is a positive. No messing around with proprietary batteries and you can always have a spare set charged and ready to go.
Wonder how this will compare to Analogue's Pocket screen.
@Soupbones they showed the two screens next to each other.
It's vaporware until I see reviews from real people.
I wish we'll get nintendo 3ds or wii fpga console, already have analogue pocket so I'm not interested in this.
@wiiware Maybe in 10 years. Anything beyond N64 is a massive pipe dream at the moment.
I really want this , but I’m a little surprised they have opted for actual batteries. I would happily upgrade to a battery pack but they don’t even offer that on the website. I like the retro look but I’m not interested in going back to batteries
Not buying a device from company led by a person that donates his money to Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
@ROBLOGNICK It's funny because that's exactly the reason why I pre-ordered one. I went for inferno, The orange Chromatic.
@rogeressig I bet you preordered the Amico as well.
Not buying a device from a guy that fundraises for Trump. Plus there's way cheaper options on the market
@iidxgold I cannot fathom why anyone wouldn't want Donald to be president again. Criminal aliens crossing the border has been rampant.
@rogeressig found the Russian troll
@iidxgold We both are breaking community rules here. You just violated rule #2 General Behaviour
'Do not post - unless you have something useful to say'
I’m glad this uses AA batteries. All these proprietary lithium batteries will hardly hold a charge in 10 years time and you won’t be able to buy decent replacements.
Still, I’ll wait to see real reviews before I buy one. I’m very interested though.
