Every now and then, we cover some non-video game-related news here on Time Extension purely because we can't resist – and today is one of those days.
Thanks to a new video by Stuart Millard, we're now up to speed on the failed UK game show Scavengers, which was given a prime-time slot on Saturday evenings back in July 1994.
With monster designs by Bob Keen (Star Wars), narration by David McCallum (The Great Escape, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) and the hosting talents of ex-Blue Peter presenter John Leslie, the show was part Alien, part Red Drawf and part Crystal Maze. Contestants were expected to take on various physical challenges in order to reclaim useful material from the stricken spaceship Cyclops.
Aided by a female android (Anna Galvin of Smallville and The New Adventures of Robin Hood fame) and facing the evil Lord Tanarge, the two-person Scavenger teams would take part in events such as 'Crusher', 'Bomb Disposal Chamber', 'Solar Tower' and 'The Final Abyss'. In each episode, Leslie (as the Commander) would indulge in action sequences which were intended to further the wafer-thin storyline.
The show's huge set was built at Pinewood Studios at the cost of £2.5 million. According to the website UK Game Shows, the programme's working title was Aliens: The Game Show, but Ridley Scott refused ITV permission to use the name.
If you don't recall Scavengers, then don't feel too bad – we didn't, either. It was a ratings disaster and would be dropped mid-run in 1994. The second half of the series was shown in the summer of 1995; it occupied the Monday morning 9:25 AM time slot, where it was seen by even less people.
We'd highly recommend you set aside 20 minutes of your day to watch Millard's video above; this thing has to be seen to be believed.

It looks terrible, but it also looks like it had lots of potential to actually be something good if handled properly. Wrong casting for the main presenter though for sure. Skinny dude with Scottish accent just ain't gonna cut it. And I say that as a skinny dude with Scottish accent.
@RetroGames Probably worth remembering that Leslie was a pretty big name in TV back then, but yeah, he's not ideal casting for sure!
John Leslie, so sleazy ha ha
Bearing in mind I was about 6 years old when it was on, I loved the heck out of this show at the time. Six-year-olds don't know what jank is!
@Damo Yeah, that [first part] was obviously their thinking on that one too.
@Damo
Until he slept with Les Dennis’ wife 😀
@Bod2019 Wasn't than Neil Morrisey? John Leslie's career went down the pan when he was mistakenly named as the guy that r**** Ulrika Jonsson
Yeah I remember, think space must have been the in thing at the time as we also had Parallel 9 on BBC filling the Saturday morning slot, those were the days....
“Peter, are you naturally strong?”
“Um, i’m not really sure.”
XD
Soooo... remake when?
I found old footage of this show on YouTube a few years ago and had vague recollections of watching it as a child. The premise was cool, but sadly the execution was somewhat lacking. A new spiritual successor show could be very entertaining if done well.
@dmcc0
Yep, you’re right, my mistake.
I loved Scavengers, but I was 7 at the time. I remember finding the way they'd wipe out/kill contestants who didn't get back to the ship in time at the end actually kind of chilling.
Trust a YouTube video to make up things which were not true in reality.
Fact check time.
1. The series was not taken off-air midway through its run. It was originally two series one shown in 1994 and the other in 1995. That was always the plan.
2. The second series was not placed at 9:25am, at least not in the Granada region where it was shown at the usual Sunday evening slot.
Additional things the YouTuber missed because they've probably only seen what was uploaded to YouTube:
1. The champions of both seasons returned for one final champion of champions episode.
2. In that episode, Android was moving around the complex giving the mission briefings after the command centre they usually occupied was attacked.
