Sega is currently working on a new entry in the Golden Axe series, but we've just discovered that Secret Base - the firm behind Double Dragon Gaiden - intended to pitch a rather more traditional take on the series which would have adopted 2D, pixel-based visuals.
The studio commissioned Pixel Romi to create mock-up screens, and they look very tasty indeed:
The developer gives a little more information on how the game's magic system would have worked, as well as a proposed dismemberment mechanic:
Magic would be AOE (instead of full screen), but I imagine that the elements would play a big role, not only in terms of weakness, but using different elements against different monster might have different effect, giving opportunity to chop off different parts.
This isn't the first time Secret Base has expressed an interest in working with this IP; last year, it revealed a different mock-up for a new Golden Axe.
Since revealing the proposed pitch, Secret Base has received some replies on social media urging the studio to continue with the project but without the Golden Axe IP.
Would you like to see this proposal become a full game? Let us know with a comment.

this is absolutely what should happen.
also I'm cautiously optimistic for a new 3D golden axe 😬
Oh wow, those screenshots are gorgeous! Honestly, besides Revenge of Death Adder, I never found the visuals in Golden Axe particularly appealing. A fantasy themed beat 'em up inspired by the works of Frank Frazetta sounds absolutely perfect. I hope this gets made in one form or another.
I feel like a lot of segas reboots are going to be not so great. It’s hard to be excited.
Yes I want this, but I want a serious golden axe, not with chibi head like double dragon gaiden. Fortunately the art direction looks serious and great (looks like evercade game, demon of asteborg), I like this kind of sprite compared to clean and painting-like art like street of rage 4.
And yes, I want this to become full game 😃
Simple Post here .. Please continue !!! I would buy this game. 👾🙂
@OldManHermit A pixel art, 2D beat 'em up with the option to play as the Death Dealer? Yes, please!
@JoystickWaggler Oh hell yeah.
The screenshots look great. Sega would be wise to let these guys develop a new 2D Golden Axe game. Sega can still release their own 3D game and maybe a year or two later release the 2D game.
Damn looks amazing!! This needs to happen regardless of a 3D remake. Look at Metroid both 2D & 3D. So this definitely needs to happen.
@jesse_dylan Yeah Sega has been hard headed since the 90s and that is what killed their console business. Even going to today, the Sega people think they can make better Sonic games than any third party, yet they constantly put out low quality stuff that gets critically panned. Sonic Mania came out and was the biggest success the franchise has had in decades.. but then Sega was like.. yeah thats enough of that, our guys can do Sonic better. They never learn.
Looks good, this needs to be given a chance.
Even if it wouldn't use the Golden Axe IP, this could be an awesome game! Really hoping they'll go forward with this in some form or other.
They should absolutely do their own thing. With the Golden Axe TV show on Comedy Central of all places, i dont think that IP is going to be the great revival Sega thinks it will.
@DestructoDisk the sad thing is the sonic games sell, whether they’re a critical success or not, so sega never really gets it. Depressing. Meanwhile soul hackers 2 (which I really enjoyed, tho needed improvements for sure) has disappeared without a trace, and it’ll be just persona and mainline smt forevermore (which is fine, just like the more obscure stuff too)
Sonic fans are long storied for being abused and coming back, over and over… but what I didn’t understand is they seem to like the abuse! (To be fair I think Sonic frontiers had the skeleton of a decent game, despite being hilariously… uh… not great…)
