Comedy Central has announced that it has greenlit a 10-episode animated series based on Sega's beloved sidescrolling hack 'n slash series Golden Axe (as reported by Variety).
According to the announcement, the show will be animated by Titmouse, with CBS Eye Animation producing along with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.
Mike McMahan (Star Trek: The Lower Decks; Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will write the first episode and will also serve as executive producers on the project. Chandler, meanwhile, will also be credited as the showrunner.
The show is set to feature the voice talents of Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead, Lisa Gilroy as Tyris Flare, Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler, Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib, and Carl Tart as Chronos “Evil” Lait.
The Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. president and CEO Haruki Satomi has also been confirmed to be an executive producer on the series, along with Sega Corporation president and COO Shuji Utsumi, and Sega’s Toru Nakahara.
Here's a synopsis for the show:
"[Golden Axe] follows veteran warriors Ax Battler (McIntyre), Tyris Flare (Gilroy), and Gilius Thunderhead (Rhys) as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib (Pudi) on their side."

So I'm assuming this will be a comedy...yikes.
There's nothing funny about a dwarf on a dinosaur trying to ride around and whack gnomes
Who was asking for this? Out of curiosity I'd give it a watch, but I don't have access to Comedy Central.
I'm a huge fan of Star Trek, but I just couldn't get into Lower Decks. Felt like knock off Rick and Morty humour.
@OldManHermit The worst part is, they are calling it (Lower Decks) canon. It is literally impossible for the stuff that happens on that show, to take place in the same universe as TNG. Every character on that show would have been kicked out of Star Fleet numerous times over.
Seems like such an odd choice to get an animated show that's a comedy. Part of me wonders if this ties into the new game Sega has in development?
A Golden Axe anime series similar to 80s OVAs would be amazing but this is the USA, where all animation is "kid stuff" or adult comedy or comedy for kids. I'll be shocked if this doesn't have talking animals in some form or another.
@DestructoDisk Oh my god, yeah. I know it's a cartoon, but every character is wacky and neurotic, I can't stand any of them. I like the concept of a more comedic ST show featuring the regular joes of starfleet, but personally I think it would work better as a more grounded live action series. I'll just go back to watching DS9 for the umpteenth time.
I didn't like Lower Decks. Granted, I only watched the first few episodes, but those are what are supposed to reel the audience in.
I have zero expectations for this adaptation and find it odd that this is what they're going with for Golden Axe.
This does come across as odd. Granted, Golden Axe isn't a huge property so if you're going to take something in a different direction, there are worse properties to pick. With this being Comedy Central and seeing who is involved, I expect it to be a zany comedy thing. I can't say I'm excited or optimistic about it, but I'll take a look at a trailer when it's ready. It reminds me of Thundercats Roar, which I oddly thought about a couple of days ago as a good example of trying to revive a property in a way that few fans of such a property seemed to want and which was poorly received as I recall.
There is only two things in this world I trust less that CBS; The United States House of Representatives, and my mother
From writers behind star trek the lower deck... nooo... 😢
I dont own a television that can play modern signals. Get reckt.
For those who think comedy is an odd choice for a Golden Axe TV adaptation: recall the ending of the arcade game. The various enemies leap out of an arcade cabinet and chase some kids around a city, followed by the heroes. It's always been a comedy! xD
I am interested for sure and willing to give it a chance. It could be fun!
I’d rather have a golden axe game that isn’t a 3D polygonal crapfest
From a Golden Axe toon i want something all-out like Korgoth of Barbaria.
Don’t think this will be like that, but i’ll still take a look.
