Burning Rangers is hands-down one of Saturn's best games, and it's a real shame that, since its release back in 1998, we've never seen a sequel or even a re-release – despite Sega saying it is open to the idea.
Rather than wait, developer Andreas Scholl decided to take matters into his own hands with Burning Rangers Tribute, an unofficial project which aims to give the 32-bit classic a modern-day lick of paint.
Initially released back in 2021, Burning Rangers Tribute has been in active development ever since. Not only does it offer HD visuals, it improves the frame rate and cleans up the visuals, even adding additional effects to make things look even more appealing.
The footage below is from 2021, but Scholl has been sharing more recent footage on his social media account – including some lovely-looking fishes.
You can download the demo here; you'll need a copy of the original game to run it.
Released on Saturn towards the end of its lifespan, Burning Rangers is the work of Sonic Team and was directed by Naoto Ohshima and produced by Yuji Naka.
Thanks to John Szczepaniak for the tip!

Like if Burning Rangers got a PSP update.. very cool
Looks great.
I really miss this game...
I bought this when it came out in 98. The Saturn was pretty much dead then and the last games Sega were releasing were pretty ropey. Like they’d given up, here in PAL land anyway. I’d like to say this was an exception but it wasn’t, I found it pretty much unplayable. Glitchy graphics, crappy frame rate and a headache inducing camera. They should have just put it on the Dreamcast instead. Hopefully this new version fixes the camera issue and caters for modern dual stick joypads.
Kudos for the effort on this. I see Burning Rangers as Sega's first step towards the design aesthetic that would be popular on Dreamcast. It definitely does not feel like other Saturn games, and it proves that, if the Saturn had a longer lifespan, games could have been pushed a lot further. Really wish this game had received a sequel. Playing through the Burning Rangers level on Sega Allstars Racing really made me think about what could have been...
Sega: Cool we support your tribute and we may want to work with you in the future, all the best.
Nintendo: YOUR GREAT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN WILL STILL BE PAYING FOR YOUR AUDACITY TO LIKE OUR WORK SO MUCH YOU MADE A FAN GAME INFRINGING ON OUR IPs.
Sweet! Burning Rangers is a classic! 😺💗🚀
